Botanical Collage

This is going to be a fun, make-it and take-it workshop/meeting. Everyone will be able to create and bring home a unique, framed botanical collage.
The meeting is at Lisa Colburn’s house and she will be the presenter.

Here are a few examples:
The first collage features Florida plants: Spiral ginger, philodendron, thatch palm bark, queen palm seed stalk and the stars are orange peel.
It’s in a rough-cut wooden frame that is 11×17. The background was spray painted with a textured black.
The other collage features plants from Maine: royal fern, smokebush leaves, a lunaria pod (money plant) and a branch from Harry Lauder’s walking stick.
It’s in a 5 x 7 inch frame – the size we’ll be using for our project.
The background is card stock that’s painted with a white and green acrylic.
If this was an official flower show, these are the guidelines we’d follow:
General Guidelines
o Must dry or preserve the materials yourself – not from the store
o List all plant materials
o Endangered, artificial, and invasive plant materials are not permitted.
o No insect parts allowed Example: Butterfly wings
o Judged by the Design Scale of Points
Design Type
- Bonded Design
- Collage (Abstract – no scenes)
- An abstract design created on a background panel with a dominance of components attached in a non-realistic arrangement.
- Components include plant material and other found objects.
iii. Staged in an upright position.
Lisa will supply some plant material but would like members to bring some of their own pressed or glycerized plant material. Twisted branches or roots add interest. Dried seeds and seed pods are great.
The club will supply the 5 x 7 unfinished frames and the glue. We’ll use silicon-based glues that adhere very quickly. Participants should bring scissors, pruning shears or paper cutters.
Keep in mind that the glue we’ll be using is strong stuff and can not be easily removed from clothes…. So dress for messy play!
