SUMMARY:Success with Succulents in SW Florida
DESCRIPTION:Our rescheduled September program title is “Success With Succulents in SW Florida”. Florida Master Gardener Joyce Laubach will share information gained from her years of experience growing succulents in our area of SW Florida. The primary focus will be on outdoor growing –  in ground and in containers\, including information on optimal plant varieties\, design considerations\, tools and materials. Many online resources provide information most relevant to growing succulents in California and Arizona. You will learn that you CAN be successful in Florida\, and Joyce will help you understand how “Right Plant – Right Place – Right Site Preparation” applies to a wide range of succulent plant types. Handouts with the information presented will be provided. \n  \n  \nJoyce’s research into gardening in Zone 10A began even before the move. She excitedly anticipated the expanded opportunity to pursue her passion for succulents – being able to grow them outdoors as well as indoors. She arrived with a scrapbook of ideas only to receive some feedback from pro landscapers discouraging the use of many of the succulent plants that interested her.  Sample comments: too rainy\, too hot\, property too small! But her research indicated a path forward that she pursued – of course learning more along the way based on research\, trial and error. \nJoyce’s home is now surrounded by a wide array of succulent plants along with many varieties of Bromeliads\, which became her second love in the garden. Having identified the succulent varieties best suited to the local climate\, Joyce was able to expand beyond her own home to design succulent beds at the Punta Gorda Nature Park\, the Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens and the Punta Gorda History Park. She has delivered presentations that share her developed expertise with audiences sponsored by both Charlotte and Collier County Master Gardener programs as well as teaching a class online for the Succulents and Sunshine.com community. \nHer presentation will concentrate on the plants and techniques that are appropriate to having success with succulents in Southwest Florida outdoor gardens. She is now able to tell those pro landscapers that their original input was inaccurate as long as optimal knowledge is applied \, and she delights in sharing that knowledge with others!

This can be a flower\, leaves\, or branches (no longer than 30 inches).  Just go out into your yard Thursday afternoon or evening and take cuttings of your favorite plants\, place them in water and hold them overnight in a cool area of your house to acclimate them.  \n2) Container grown/potted plants that you have owned and cared for two months or more.  This can be any healthy\, attractive potted plant or hanging basket – foliage\, flowering\, or succulent plants. The only limitation is that it must be small enough to be lifted easily by the show volunteers.  (Less than 20 pounds) Please do not bring big heavy floor plants. \nBring your entries and plants to the Shannon Staub Library Thursday morning\, March 30th @ 9:00AM.  There will be volunteers to help you identify your plant by its botanical name.  Judging begins @ 11:30AM. Find out about how entries placed and see the ribbons awarded when you arrive for the Membership Meeting @1:00PM. \nHere is a printable version of the schedule:\nhttps://allamandagardenclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Spring-Has-Sprung.pdf

SUMMARY:Botanical Collage
DESCRIPTION:This is going to be a fun\, make-it and take-it workshop/meeting. Everyone will be able to create and bring home a unique\, framed botanical collage. \nThe meeting is at Lisa Colburn’s house and she will be the presenter. \nHere’s a recording of the Zoom meeting Lisa gave on Nov. 22nd It discusses the basics of botanical collage – including a Power Point Presentation with lots of ideas. Click on the link. You’ll be asked to enter this code: D6b#C^pB https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/A5mM5GeCsWpJY_f003r9sGOqnq2LsjLJf9ltKEiKwSpnew2P3uMnZ-RSF6jNIpIA.UI913un76BoFN2qe \n  \nHere are a few examples: \nThe first collage features Florida plants:  Spiral ginger\, philodendron\, thatch palm bark\, queen palm seed stalk and the stars are orange peel. \nIt’s in a rough-cut wooden frame that is 11×17. The background was spray painted with a textured black. \n \nThe other collage features plants from Maine: royal fern\, smokebush leaves\, a lunaria pod (money plant) and a branch from Harry Lauder’s walking stick.  \n \nIt’s in a 5 x 7 inch frame – the size we’ll be using for our project. \nThe background is card stock that’s painted with a white and green acrylic. \nIf this was an official flower show\, these are the guidelines we’d follow: \n  \nGeneral Guidelines \no   Must dry or preserve the materials yourself – not from the store \no   List all plant materials \no   Endangered\, artificial\, and invasive plant materials are not permitted. \no   No insect parts allowed Example: Butterfly wings \no   Judged by the Design Scale of Points \nDesign Type \n\nBonded Design\nCollage (Abstract – no scenes)\nAn abstract design created on a background panel with a dominance of components attached in a non-realistic arrangement.\nComponents include plant material and other found objects.\n\niii.            Staged in an upright position. \n  \nLisa will supply some plant material but would like members to bring some of their own pressed or glycerized plant material. Twisted branches or roots add interest. Dried seeds and seed pods are great. \nThe club will supply the 5 x 7 unfinished frames and the glue. We’ll use silicon-based glues that adhere very quickly. Participants should bring scissors\, pruning shears or paper cutters. \nKeep in mind that the glue we’ll be using is strong stuff and can not be easily removed from clothes…. So dress for messy play! \nThis YouTube video discusses Botanical Jewelry…. while we won’t be making jewelry\, how this designer uses plant materials may inspire you. \nhttps://youtu.be/BtLNYAS27LY

SUMMARY:Horticulture Flower Show
DESCRIPTION:Susie Cochran\, our Flower Show Chair\, and her crew have planned a simple horticulture and design show that will let all of you shine!  Don’t be shy!  We want this to be fun!  Everyone has at least one plant that they take particular pride in!  Go for it! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s easy!  For design you can:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n1) Make a Thanksgiving table arrangement meant to be viewed from two sides\, and/or \n\n2) Make a Christmas flower arrangement meant to be viewed from one side only. \n\nThe only limitation is that the arrangements must be composed of plant material\, nothing artificial.  If it comes from a plant\, you can use it!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor horticulture\, you can bring any of the following:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n1) Cuttings from one or more plants in your yard (shrub\, tree\, annual or perennial) that are healthy and attractive. This can be a flower\, leaves or branches (no longer than 30 inches).  Just go out into your yard Thursday afternoon or evening and take cuttings of your favorite plants\, place them in water and hold them overnight in a cool area of your house to acclimate them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2) Container grown/potted plants that you have owned and cared for for two months or more.  This can be any healthy\, attractive potted plant or hanging basket –  foliage\, flowering\, or succulent plants. The only limitation is that it must be small enough to be lifted easily by the show volunteers.  (Less than 20 pounds) Please do not bring big heavy floor plants.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBring your plants to the Pavilion at Dallas White Park between 8:00 and 9:00 Friday morning.  There will be volunteers to help you identify your plant by its botanical name.  Placings and ribbons will be available when you arrive for our 1:00 general membership meeting.\n\n\nRegular meeting begins at 1:00pm.

Suggested $10 to $15 value.\nWe’ll have a RAFFLE for gift baskets\, holiday floral centerpieces\, and….we’ll be drawing the winning ticket for the Gourmet Dinner for Four with Chef Paul!\nSign-up at the meeting in November. Payment of $25 is expected at the meeting. Check made out to Allamanda Garden Club. \n For more information Contact Christy Glenn   941-423-2267   gardenglenn1@gmail.com\nCan’t make the meeting? Mail check and indicate meal selection to: \nChristine Glenn\n5112 Pine Shadow Lane\nNorth Port\, FL  34287\n  \nWhat’s a Yankee Gift Swap? – also called “Dirty Santa” \nSuitable for small to large groups\, adds an element of excitement and humor to traditional gift giving. \nIn a Yankee Swap\, each participant brings a wrapped\, unmarked gift and places it in a designated area. Guests are given numbers as they arrive\, or their names are randomly drawn\, and they select and unwrap gifts from the pile in that order — with a twist. \nThe person who receives the number 1 will pick a gift (that is not their own) from the pile and open it for all to see (or models it\, reads it\, or demos it). During the selection of a wrapped gift\, the participant may visually inspect the gifts\, pick them up and/or gently shake them. \nThe person who receives number 2 then chooses a gift and opens it\, and then must decide whether to keep it or swap it for the first player’s gift. Each person in order then gets to select a present\, open it and decide whether to keep it or swap it for any other gift someone has already opened. \nOpening of gifts and swapping takes place until all the presents have been chosen. Finally\, the person who picked first gets to choose from all the gifts or keep what he/she has already received. In the end\, the gift you are holding is the gift you take home. \nBecause all the gifts are wrapped or in gift bags\, you don’t get people taking the most obvious best gift or leaving the least desirable for last. It also adds an element of surprise! Most of the fun happens as people “steal” gifts from each other! \n  \n
